How to Design a Custom Engagement Ring
A step-by-step guide to the custom engagement ring design process — from your first idea to holding the finished ring in your hands.
Why Choose a Custom Engagement Ring
An engagement ring is one of the few objects a person will wear every day for the rest of their life. Most people would not choose a house, a car, or even a piece of furniture from a limited pre-made selection without considering alternatives — yet many settle for the closest match they can find in a retail display case.
The custom design process exists to solve that problem. Rather than finding a ring that is close to what you want, you work with a jeweller to build exactly what you want — the specific stone, the exact setting style, the precise metal, and the fine details that make the piece personal. The result is a ring that could not have come from a catalogue because it was designed from scratch around a specific vision.
The assumption that custom rings are prohibitively expensive is largely unfounded. Because you are selecting specific components rather than paying for a retailer’s inventory and overhead, custom rings at Aurela Diamonds are priced comparably to ready-made alternatives of equivalent quality. The difference is that the custom ring is built for you, not for a display case.
Fully Personal
Every element reflects your preferences, not what was available off the shelf.
No Compromise
No settling for "close enough." The stone and setting are exactly what you choose.
Comparable Cost
Custom rings at Aurela Diamonds are priced on the same basis as ready-made alternatives.
The Custom Design Process
The custom ring design process at Aurela Diamonds follows a clear, straightforward path. There are no commitments required until you are ready, and the consultation stage costs nothing.
Free Consultation
The process begins with a conversation — in person in Vancouver or virtually for clients across Canada and the USA. We discuss what you have in mind: style preferences, any reference images you have collected, your budget, and any specific requirements. There is no pressure and no commitment at this stage. The goal is simply to understand what you are looking for.
Diamond Selection
We hand select each diamond for your ring. Every engagement ring stone is IGI certified and chosen specifically to suit your design, ensuring the quality and character of the diamond matches the piece it will become.
Setting Design
With the stone confirmed, we move to the setting. This may involve selecting from existing design templates that are then adapted to your specifications, or starting from a concept you bring to us. We discuss metal type (platinum, white gold, yellow gold, rose gold), setting style (solitaire, halo, pavé, three-stone, and others), prong style, band profile, and any personalisation such as engravings.
Design Approval
Before any work begins, you see and approve the design. For more complex pieces this may involve a detailed digital rendering. You confirm every detail before production starts. Nothing is made without your explicit approval.
Crafting
The ring is crafted by skilled artisans. Every piece is inspected at multiple stages during production. The diamond is set, the metal is finished, and the ring undergoes a final quality check before delivery.
Delivery
The finished ring is delivered to you, fully insured and packaged. For clients outside Vancouver, we ship securely across Canada and the USA. The ring arrives with its IGI certificate and is ready for the moment you have planned.
Choosing Your Diamond
The diamond is the centrepiece of almost every engagement ring, and choosing it is typically the most consequential decision in the design process. The key variables are shape, carat weight, cut quality, colour, and clarity — the classic 4Cs framework, plus shape.
Shape First
Shape is the most visually defining characteristic of a diamond and should typically be decided before the other variables. The most popular shapes for engagement rings are round brilliant (maximum sparkle), oval (elongating and elegant), cushion (soft and romantic), and emerald (sophisticated and architectural). Each shape interacts differently with light and has distinct visual characteristics that affect how the ring looks on the hand.
If you are designing a surprise engagement ring, consider what shapes your partner tends to gravitate toward. Pinterest boards and Instagram saves are often a useful guide, as is paying attention to the jewellery they already wear.
Lab-Grown vs Mined
For custom rings, we work exclusively with lab-grown diamonds. These are real diamonds — chemically, physically, and optically identical to mined stones — produced in controlled environments using technology that replicates natural diamond formation. Every stone is IGI certified. The practical advantage of lab-grown diamonds for a custom ring is significant: you achieve a meaningfully larger and higher-quality stone for the same budget, which translates directly into a more impressive finished piece.

Recommended Grades for a Custom Ring
For most custom engagement rings, we recommend prioritising cut (Excellent or Ideal), choosing G or H colour (visually white, meaningfully less expensive than D-F), and selecting VS2 or SI1 clarity (eye-clean in virtually all shapes). This approach directs the majority of your budget toward carat weight and cut quality — the factors that most affect how impressive the finished ring looks.
Choosing Your Setting
The setting determines the overall aesthetic of the ring and affects both the appearance of the diamond and its practical durability. Key decisions include setting style, metal type, and prong configuration.
Solitaire
A single diamond on a plain band. Timeless, elegant, and lets the stone do the work. The most classic engagement ring design.
Halo
A ring of smaller diamonds surrounds the centre stone. Maximises visual presence and makes the centre stone appear larger.
Pavé
Small diamonds set closely along the band. Adds brilliance and a sense of luxury to the overall design.
Three-Stone
Centre stone flanked by two side stones. Symbolic of past, present, and future. A meaningful and beautiful design.
Cathedral
Arching metal supports elevate the centre stone. Creates height and drama, well-suited to larger stones.
Bezel
A rim of metal encircles the diamond. The most secure setting style and highly practical for active lifestyles.
Metal Choice
The most common metals for engagement rings are platinum, 18k white gold, 18k yellow gold, and 18k rose gold. Platinum is the most durable and hypoallergenic, with a naturally white colour that does not require rhodium plating to maintain its appearance. It is also the most expensive. White gold achieves a similar look at a lower price point but requires periodic re-plating. Yellow and rose gold are enjoying a significant resurgence and pair beautifully with warmer-toned diamond shapes like cushion and oval cuts.
Timeline and What to Expect
The custom design process at Aurela Diamonds typically takes 4 to 6 weeks from the initial consultation to ring delivery. This includes the consultation and design stage, stone sourcing, production, quality inspection, and shipping. For clients with a specific proposal date in mind, we recommend beginning the process at least 6 to 8 weeks in advance to allow comfortable time for each stage without rushing.
Rush production is possible for certain designs, but it is always better to have time to do the process properly. The ring will be worn for decades — a few extra weeks at the design stage is time well spent.

Tips for First-Time Custom Ring Buyers
Designing a ring for the first time can feel daunting. A few practical suggestions make the process easier and the outcome better.
Collect Reference Images Before You Start
Before your consultation, spend some time looking at rings on Pinterest, Instagram, or jewellery websites and save images of anything that appeals to you. You do not need to know exactly what you want — a collection of images that feels cohesive is enough to give a jeweller a clear sense of your direction. What you like is often as informative as what you love.
Know Your Partner’s Ring Size (or Get Close)
Resizing a ring after the proposal is common and straightforward for most designs. However, knowing the approximate size in advance prevents the ring being dramatically wrong. Borrowing a ring your partner wears on their ring finger and having it measured is the most reliable method. If that is not possible, the average women’s ring size in Canada is between 6 and 7.
Be Honest About Your Budget
A good jeweller will work within your budget, not try to push you beyond it. Being clear about what you want to spend allows us to show you the best options within that range rather than wasting time on alternatives that are not realistic. There is no budget too modest for a beautiful ring — it is a matter of making the right choices within whatever you have.
Think About Practicality
An engagement ring is worn daily, often through a wide range of activities. High, elaborate settings are beautiful but can catch on clothing and require more careful maintenance. Certain styles are better suited to active lifestyles than others. Consider your partner’s daily life when making design choices — a ring they love to wear every day is more valuable than a showpiece that stays in a box.
Frequently Asked Questions
The full process at Aurela Diamonds typically takes 4 to 6 weeks from the initial consultation to delivery. This covers the consultation and design stage, stone sourcing, production, quality inspection, and shipping. If you have a specific proposal date in mind, we recommend starting at least 6 to 8 weeks in advance. Rush production is available for certain designs, but the standard timeline allows every stage to be done properly.
Not at all. Most clients come to the first consultation with a general sense of direction — perhaps a preferred shape, a rough budget, or a collection of reference images — and we work through the details together. If you have no idea where to start, that is fine too. The consultation is a conversation, not a test. Our role is to help you figure out what you want, not to expect you to arrive with a complete brief.
Not necessarily. At Aurela Diamonds, custom rings are priced on the same basis as ready-made options: you pay for the stone and the setting. There is no premium for the custom design process itself. In fact, custom rings often offer better value because you are building exactly what you want rather than paying for inventory and showroom overhead associated with retail chain pricing.
Absolutely. We work with clients across Canada and the USA. The entire design process can be completed virtually — consultation by video call, digital design approvals, and secure insured shipping to your door. Many of our clients are in Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, Victoria, and other Canadian cities, as well as the United States. There is no requirement to visit in person, though you are always welcome to do so.
We can design a custom setting around an existing stone. This is a meaningful way to incorporate an heirloom diamond into a new piece. We would need to assess the stone during the consultation to confirm its dimensions and condition, which informs the setting design. Bring the stone or its certification details to the first conversation.
The most reliable method is borrowing a ring they wear on their ring finger and having it measured. A jeweller can measure it in seconds. If that is not possible, a piece of string or a thin strip of paper wrapped around the base of your own ring finger and compared to a ring size chart gives a reasonable estimate. Standard women's ring sizes in Canada fall between 5 and 8, with 6 to 7 being the most common. Rings can always be resized after the proposal, so an approximate size is sufficient.
