Diamond Certification Explained

Understand what IGI certification means, how to read a diamond grading report, and why independent certification is essential for every diamond purchase.

What Is Diamond Certification?

A diamond certificate -- also known as a grading report or diamond dossier -- is an official document issued by an independent gemological laboratory that provides a comprehensive, objective assessment of a diamond’s quality characteristics. Think of it as your diamond’s identity document: a permanent, third-party record of exactly what you are buying.

The certification process begins when a diamond is submitted to the laboratory by a manufacturer, dealer, or jeweller. The stone is examined by multiple trained gemologists using standardised methodology, calibrated equipment, and controlled lighting conditions. Each gemologist grades the diamond independently, and their assessments are reconciled to produce a final grade for each quality characteristic. This multi-grader approach minimises subjectivity and ensures consistency.

The resulting certificate includes detailed information about the diamond’s 4Cs (Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat Weight), as well as its physical measurements, proportions, polish and symmetry grades, fluorescence, and any notable characteristics. For lab-grown diamonds, the certificate also specifies the growth method (CVD or HPHT) and may include additional details about the stone’s origin.

It is important to understand that a certificate is a quality report, not an appraisal or valuation. It tells you what the diamond is, not what it is worth in monetary terms. However, because it provides the objective quality data needed for pricing, it is the foundation upon which fair market value is determined.

IGI: The Gold Standard for Lab-Grown Diamonds

The International Gemological Institute (IGI) was founded in 1975 in Antwerp, Belgium -- the historical heart of the global diamond trade. Over nearly five decades, IGI has grown into one of the world’s largest and most respected gemological laboratories, with operations spanning across multiple continents. It is widely recognised as the leading authority for lab-grown diamond certification.

IGI’s pre-eminence in lab-grown diamond grading is not accidental. When the lab-grown diamond market began to mature, IGI invested heavily in the science, equipment, and expertise required to accurately identify and grade these stones. Today, IGI has graded more lab-grown diamonds than any other laboratory in the world. Their experience translates to consistency, accuracy, and industry trust.

IGI grading is conducted under rigorous, standardised conditions. Diamonds are evaluated in a controlled environment with calibrated lighting (D65 daylight equivalent), and each stone is examined by a minimum of three gemologists. The laboratory uses advanced spectroscopic equipment to verify the diamond’s natural or lab-grown origin, and this determination is included on the certificate. IGI also employs proprietary software for measuring proportions and light performance, adding a technological layer to human expertise.

At Aurela Diamonds, we chose IGI as our exclusive certification partner because of their leadership in lab-grown diamond grading, their rigorous standards, and the trust they command throughout the industry. Every diamond in our collection comes with a full IGI grading report.

How to Read a Diamond Certificate

A diamond certificate can look dense and technical at first glance, but each section serves a specific purpose. Here is a breakdown of every major element you will find on an IGI grading report, explained in plain language.

Report Number

A unique identifier assigned to this specific diamond. This number is also laser-inscribed on the diamond's girdle (the thin edge around the widest point) and can be used to verify the certificate online. It is your diamond's serial number.

Shape & Cutting Style

Identifies the diamond's shape (round brilliant, oval, emerald, etc.) and the faceting pattern used. Round brilliants have 57 or 58 facets; fancy shapes vary.

Measurements

The physical dimensions of the diamond in millimetres. For round diamonds, this is diameter (minimum-maximum) x depth. For fancy shapes, it is length x width x depth. Measurements help you understand the actual size of the diamond on the hand.

Carat Weight

The weight of the diamond, measured to the hundredth of a carat (e.g., 1.02 ct). One carat equals 0.2 grams. This is the most objective measurement on the certificate.

Colour Grade

The diamond's body colour on the D-to-Z scale. D is completely colourless; Z has visible yellow or brown tint. For most purchases, G-H offers the best balance of appearance and value.

Clarity Grade

The presence and visibility of inclusions and blemishes, from Flawless (FL) to Included (I3). The certificate may include a "clarity plot" -- a diagram showing the location, size, and type of inclusions.

Cut Grade (Round Brilliants)

For round diamonds, IGI assigns a formal cut grade (Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor) based on proportions, symmetry, and polish. This is the single most important grade on the certificate. Fancy shapes do not receive a formal cut grade.

Polish & Symmetry

Polish assesses the smoothness of the diamond's facet surfaces. Symmetry evaluates how precisely the facets are aligned and shaped. Both are graded Excellent to Poor. Aim for Excellent or Very Good in both.

Fluorescence

Describes the diamond's reaction to ultraviolet light: None, Faint, Medium, Strong, or Very Strong. Most fluorescence has no visible impact in normal lighting. In some cases, Strong blue fluorescence can make a lower-colour diamond appear whiter.

Inscription

The unique report number laser-inscribed on the diamond's girdle. This microscopic inscription is invisible to the naked eye but can be seen under 10x magnification and provides a permanent link between the physical diamond and its certificate.

IGI vs. GIA: Understanding the Difference

The two most widely recognised diamond grading laboratories in the world are IGI (International Gemological Institute) and GIA (Gemological Institute of America). Both are independent, non-profit organisations with rigorous grading standards. The question of “which is better” is not straightforward -- it depends on the type of diamond you are purchasing.

For lab-grown diamonds, IGI is the clear choice. Their deep experience with lab-grown stones, investment in identification technology, and industry-leading volume of lab-grown certifications make them the most trusted authority in this category. For mined diamonds, both IGI and GIA are excellent, with GIA having a slight edge in historical reputation for natural stones. Regardless of the laboratory, what matters most is that you buy a certified diamond from a reputable grading body -- never an uncertified stone.

How to Verify Your Diamond Online

One of the significant benefits of certified diamonds is the ability to independently verify their grading report online. This provides an additional layer of trust and allows you to confirm that the physical diamond you received matches its documentation. Here is how to verify your IGI-certified diamond step by step.

Step-by-Step Verification

  1. Locate your certificate number. This is printed prominently at the top of your physical IGI grading report. It is also laser-inscribed on your diamond’s girdle (the thin edge visible from the side), which can be read under 10x magnification.
  2. Visit the IGI website. Navigate to www.igi.org and find the “Verify Your Report” section, typically accessible from the homepage or main navigation.
  3. Enter your certificate number. Type or paste the unique report number into the verification field and submit.
  4. Review the digital report. The system will display a digital copy of the grading report, including all 4Cs grades, measurements, proportions, and any additional details. Compare this with your physical certificate and the diamond itself to confirm everything matches.
  5. Save for your records. We recommend downloading or printing the digital report as a backup. It is also useful for insurance purposes.

If the certificate number cannot be found in the IGI database, or if any details on the digital report do not match your physical certificate, contact the jeweller immediately. At Aurela Diamonds, every diamond we sell has been verified against the IGI database before delivery, and we encourage all customers to perform their own independent verification for complete peace of mind.

The laser inscription on the diamond’s girdle can also be verified independently. Any jeweller or gemologist with a 10x loupe or a gemological microscope can locate and read the inscription. This physical-digital link ensures that the certificate belongs to your specific diamond and has not been transferred or falsified.

Why Certification Matters

Buying an uncertified diamond is one of the most significant financial risks a consumer can take in the jewellery market. Without independent certification, there is no objective way to verify the quality claims a seller makes. A diamond that a seller describes as “G colour, VS1 clarity” could actually be J colour, SI2 clarity -- a difference that represents thousands of dollars in value but is extremely difficult for a non-expert to detect.

Objective Quality Verification

Certification removes guesswork. You know exactly what you are getting because an independent laboratory has verified every quality characteristic. This protects you from overgrading, misrepresentation, and fraud.

Fair Pricing Assurance

Diamond pricing is directly tied to the 4Cs grades. With a certificate, you can compare prices across sellers for diamonds of the same grade, ensuring you pay a fair market price. Without it, you have no basis for comparison.

Insurance & Appraisal

Insurance companies require a grading report to insure your diamond. The certificate provides the documentation needed for accurate coverage and claims processing. Without it, getting your ring properly insured is difficult or impossible.

Resale & Upgrade

If you ever decide to sell, trade, or upgrade your diamond, a certificate from a reputable lab like IGI is essential. It gives potential buyers or jewellers confidence in the stone's quality, making transactions smoother and values more transparent.

Identity & Security

The unique certificate number inscribed on your diamond creates a permanent link between the stone and its documentation. This helps identify your diamond if it is ever separated from its setting, such as during repairs or in the event of loss.

Confidence & Peace of Mind

Ultimately, certification gives you confidence that you made an informed, wise purchase. You can enjoy your diamond knowing its quality has been verified by the world's leading experts, not just by the person selling it to you.

At Aurela Diamonds, certification is non-negotiable. We would never sell an uncertified diamond, and we believe no consumer should buy one. Frequently Asked Questions

IGI (International Gemological Institute) is one of the world's largest and most respected independent gemological laboratories. An IGI certificate is a detailed report that provides an unbiased assessment of a diamond's quality based on the 4Cs (Cut, Color, Clarity, Carat Weight), along with measurements, proportions, and other characteristics. It serves as a diamond's identity document.

Yes. IGI and GIA are both highly respected, independent grading laboratories with rigorous standards. IGI is the global leader in lab-grown diamond certification and has graded more lab-grown diamonds than any other lab. For lab-grown diamonds specifically, IGI is widely considered the gold standard in the industry.

Visit the IGI website (www.igi.org) and enter your certificate number in the "Verify Your Report" tool. This will display a digital copy of your diamond's grading report, including all 4Cs grades, measurements, and the plot diagram. The certificate number is also laser-inscribed on your diamond's girdle for physical verification.

Absolutely. A diamond without independent certification is essentially unverified -- you are relying solely on the seller's claims about quality. Certification provides objective, third-party verification of the 4Cs, protects your investment, and is essential for insurance purposes. At Aurela Diamonds, every stone comes with full IGI certification.

An IGI certificate includes: the diamond's shape and cutting style, measurements (length x width x depth), carat weight, colour grade, clarity grade with a plot diagram showing inclusion locations, cut grade (for round brilliants), polish and symmetry grades, fluorescence, and any additional comments or inscriptions. For lab-grown diamonds, the growth method (CVD or HPHT) is also noted.
